Jesus said, “Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (John 15:11)
When William Utermohlen painted this self-portrait (see portrait lower left) in 1967 he had no idea that it would become the first in a series of self-portraits that chronicle the effects of dementia on the creative processes of the brain. William Utermohlen spent a lifetime developing his artistic skill and is best known for his ability to produce detailed illustrations. His skill as an artist was the catalyst for his very successful career in New York and throughout Europe, but in 1995 at the age of 62 his career took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia. Dementia is a degenerative brain disorder that slowly erodes the capacity of the brain to perform basic functions. It affects memory and motor skills, and with no known cure it eventually ends in death. According to a recent New York Times article, after learning he had the disease; William decided he would attempt to understand the disease by painting himself. What unfolded over a period of five years was a series of paintings that reflect his feelings of anger, sadness, confusion, fear and resignation. You can literally see him vanish over time with his final portrait a ghostly reflection of his inner torment (see portrait upper right). William Uterhohlen is now 73 years old, no longer paints, and is living in a nursing home in London.
Jesus said, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” (John 3:6) Williams haunting paintings reveal that although the body is broken the spirit is still very much alive. Over a period of years his portraits took on a primitive abstract quality which he was aware of but had not intended. The portraits graphically reveal the debilitating effects of the disease evoking deep feelings of awe and sadness from everyone who views this series of paintings. The emotional spirit these paintings portray has captured global interest and sparked renewed discussions on the need for more research to discover a cure fore this debilitating disease. As heartbreaking as William Utermohlen paintings are, they provide us with yet another opportunity to understand the teaching of Jesus on a much deeper level. How can understanding dementia help you understand the deeper message of Jesus Christ? And how you see dementia as a gift instead of a tragedy?

Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11)
If there is one thing about Archbishop Desmond Tutu that everyone notices it is his joy, which can bubble over at any moment into giggles and laughter. Even when making a serious statement his infectious giggling is known to over take him. His joy stems from what he believes to be a mandate from God to speak out on justice and Truth. He is best known for his anti-apartheid activism, but he is also a Nobel Laureate and the recent winner of the prestigious Gandhi Peace Award. He has been and continues to be an outspoken critic of the United States led war in Iraq as well as the related issues of torture and imprisonment without legal representation. It surprises him that the United States would resort to such barbaric tactics; the very same used by Apartheid in South Africa. He openly describes the war in Iraq as illegal and immoral, but even the horrific situation in Iraq is not enough to stop his laughter.
Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”(John 15:11) The Joy of Jesus is within you. It is the source of the Archbishop Tutu’s laughter. He literally sees everyone as basically good and recognizes that the inherent instinct for freedom lives within everyone. He is quoted in a recent Washington Post article as saying, “Everyone has an instinct for freedom because God has imbued each one of us with a gift of freedom,” followed by his famous infectious giggle. He simply cannot contain the joy of God that can bubble out of him at any moment. Giggles are not usually synonymous with Jesus or his teaching, but giggles reveal the narrow gate of freedom that Jesus points everyone toward – the narrow gate of Eternal Life. How can giggles help us to discover this narrow gate that Jesus speaks of? And how can giggles help you better understand the teaching of Jesus Christ?

Jesus said, “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven” (Matthew 6:36-37)法官不,你不会判断;不谴责,你不会受到谴责;原谅,你会原谅"(马太6:36-37)
The pain of the Amish Christian community in Lancaster Pennsylvania USA has been felt around the world as they grieve the loss of five of their children and five others who are still hospitalized. The death of a child strikes at the core of any parent. It is the most heartbreaking experience for any parent to endure especially when the death is caused by the malicious acts of another adult. In the context of the murder of five young girls the Amish have demonstrated the unbelievable power of forgiveness. A grandfather of one of the slain girls immediately went to the home of the attacker offering condolences and forgiveness even hugging the father of his granddaughter’s murderer. This is a profound demonstration of the Grace and Love of Jesus Christ in action.
Jesus said, “But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.” (Luke 6:27-31) Love and forgiveness is the core teaching of Jesus Christ, but forgiveness is often misconstrued as condoning. As the Amish have demonstrated, forgiveness is an act of letting go from the heart so that healing can begin. It lives in the recognition that nothing you do today will change something that happened yesterday. Judgment and anger are of the mind. Forgiveness lives in the realm of the heart. True forgiveness requires spiritual maturity as well as a deep understanding of the teachings of Jesus that is rare in today’s world. How does forgiveness promote healing? And how can the Amish example help you to forgive?

Jesus said, “Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.” (Matthew 26:52)
A conversation that took place over 600 years ago between a Byzantine Emperor named Manuel II Paleologus and a highly educated Persian has sparked outrage over the past several weeks from Muslims throughout the world. The controversy arose earlier last month after the most Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI used a single quote from this conversation during a lecture at the University of Regensburg. Pope Benedict XVI quoted the Byzantine Emperor to emphasize the importance of Reason and Faith, but when this quote was taken out of context it was misconstrued by many Muslims as an affront by the Pope against their most Holy Prophet Mohammad. What has been overlooked during this ongoing controversy is that the subject of the conversation that occurred between the Emperor and the Persian was about Christianity and Islam, and the Truth of both. It represents a comprehensive discussion of the structures of faith contained in both the Bible and in the Qur’an. The Pope was focusing on a single point that the Emperor made during this conversation that violence is incompatible with religion and that spreading the faith through violence was unreasonable or more simply that faith without reason can lead to violence and extremism, which holds true for any religion not just Islam or Christianity. As the Pope illuminates, “Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the human soul. Faith is born of the soul not the body.”
Jesus said, “For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.”(Matthew 26:52) In this moment, when he is about to be arrested by the Romans, he does not judge violence he simply reveals that violence leads to continued violence. This is the universal law of cause and effect – if you choose to be violent then violence will indeed return to you. As the Pope points out “Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the human soul. Faith is born of the soul not the body.” Violence is of the flesh while Faith is of the spirit. Jesus is a living demonstration of faith. He reveals that faith lives in the spirit which cannot be touched by anything even death. Jesus explains, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matthew 10:28) This is the key to understanding the eternal message of Jesus Christ. It reveals the source of violence as well as the source of faith. Jesus illuminates, “ It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”(John 6:63) He unveils the Truth that both violence and faith are born out of a single word. What is this word? And how can it help us understand the teaching of Jesus on a deeper level?
